Summer Reading and Sports Program photo

The YouthBuild Boston Summer Reading and Sports Program provides 50 young people, ages 7-13 an opportunity to remain in the community and have a camp experience complete with academics and recreation. The majority of the participants are involved with the Drop-In program but YBB does receive referrals from Children's Services of Roxbury. The program runs for 7 weeks from 8am-4pm with mornings dedicated to reading enhancement and academic enrichment and afternoons spent in recreational and cultural activities.

Students, divided into small groups according to grade level, will read books from a reading list developed by staff, the Boston Public Library, and Reading is Fundamental. Students receive three books over the course of the summer and must complete two book reports. Students also receive instruction in math, science and history so they can retain and maintain the skills and information learned during the school year. As with the Drop-In program, students learn to use the computer. In fact, the older students are required to type their book reports using the computer.

After lunch, provided by the Boston Public Schools Summer Feeding Program, students engage in sports activities geared for their physical and social development. We participate in Boston's Parks and Recreational Sports program. This program provides weekly clinics in a variety of sports like basketball, tennis, and golf throughout Boston's parks. Additionally, campers also have the opportunity to swim, do arts and crafts and take weekly field trips within New England.
