The Designery is YouthBuild Boston’s hands-on urban architecture workshop for high school students. Designery students hone their problem solving skills through a team based approach to real-world architectural problems. Designery students, or ‘Junior Designers’, are urban youth, ages 14-18. They explore architectural and landscape design, project and construction management principles, and new career opportunities. They develop life and job-readiness skills, build self-esteem, and serve their communities.
Junior Designers work together in teams to complete meaningful service projects. They collaborate with professional architects, private sector companies, educational partners, and community based agencies. Each service project aims to meet the spatial needs of the Designery’s clients — local nonprofits, community agencies, and outdoor public spaces. Projects vary widely, ranging from aesthetic interior work, to functional landscape design, to energy effi ciency measures.
The Designery and YouthBuild Boston have a keen focus on sustainable building. We
steadily shape our curriculum to incorporate green principles every day in our construction,
landscaping and design projects. We expose students to practices that are vital to success in the future.
The Designery provides an environment where youth develop life skills working in teams to
plan and complete design and construction projects. Through research and in numerous professional networks and organizations, they develop skills that will help them succeed in high school and beyond. The students learn in-depth about these fi elds through fi eld trips
to job sites, professional fi rms, and relevant locations around Boston. Participants are highly
engaged in the learning process because they have a personal stake in the project’s
success and are accountable to their community client.
The Designery is located in its own studio space, at 1884 Washington St. in Roxbury. It is accessible by bus and by the Silver Line.
